Intellectual property matters at International Forum

July 15, 2025

We would like to inform all presenters at the international forum about the appropriate handling of intellectual property including matters related to patents.
The international forum will be held as a peer-reviewed international conference. Basically, if there is a possibility of filling a patent application in the near future and/or a patent application by a joint research partner, you should refrain from presenting the related content at this forum.
Presentations at the international forum will be handled in the same way as regular academic conference presentations. Therefore, the contents of the presentation will be treated as open to the public.
If you present something for which you plan to apply for a patent at the international forum, you may find it difficult or impossible to apply for a patent due to the loss of novelty caused by your own publication.
The Japanese patent law provides relief provisions for preserving novelty (the article 30 of the patent law suggests that novelty will not be lost for one year from the date of presentation, according to prescribed procedures).
However, if you are planning to apply for a patent in other jurisdictions such as United States, Europe, or other countries in Asia, please exercise extra caution, as the legal provisions regarding public disclosure and novelty may differ significantly from those in Japan.
Before the presentation, all presenters are strongly advised to consult with their academic supervisors to confirm whether the content is appropriate for public disclosure, regardless of whether it may involve intellectual property. Particular attention should be paid to any content potentially related to patent applications.
Participants are kindly reminded not to disclose or discuss any confidential research, proprietary information, or content that may be related to current, pending, or potential future patents during the forum. This precaution is intended to protect intellectual property rights and ensure compliance with all applicable confidentiality obligations.
Please understand the above situation.

Respectfully yours,
